I love my Toyota Corolla
Luxury cars are nice, I like them. My dad has an S-class Mercedes Sedan and it's one of the finest pieces of advanced machinery I have ever seen. Driven it a few times and very few cars can compare to it. If you can afford to buy a luxury car or you are a car guy with adequate disposable income, then yes, go on and buy a fancy car. But the problem is that for the vast majority of people, luxury cars are far beyond their means. The amount of BMW 5 and 7 series i'm seeing on the road is staggering. Everyone is skipping the entry level 3 series and they are going for the more prestigious BMW models. Seems like everyone has an Escalade, Cayenne, BMW X5 or Lexus truck with at least 22 inch rims. I saw the janitor at my nephews school pull up in a late model Yukon Denali truck, complete with navigation, rims, vertical doors and tv screens in the headrests. He's a janitor!!
Sadly, I have a few friends like this. These guys are far from car buffs. They don't know squat about cars, but they do know about status, and they know that having a bimmer, lexus, escalade or a benz increases their status, so they get one. It's kind of sad when you think about it. You get a couple of skanks to do a double take when you are out on the town, so what? Is that so important? Why are they seeking the approval of others so badly?
It's gotten to the point where having a luxury vehicle means absolutely nothing. Everyone has one. Go to any housing projects or ghetto and you will see the finest automobiles from Jaguar, to Benz to BMW to Cadillacs, all there. Maybe that's why they are still poor and have no money. All their meager earnings goes to car payments and premium gas.
My friend is complaining about the monstrosity he calls a car. He has a 2006 Lincoln Navigator. He just couldn't have it stock. He had to put rims on it, drop down lcd in the rear, two lcds in the headrest, playstation 2, pioneer dvd player/touch screen navigation in the front and all the trappings of wealth, or the facade of wealth. He's anything but wealthy. I mean, he's not poor. He does alright, but not $80,000 worth of vehicle alright. So he has all this useless shit in his car, people oogle it for a few seconds, but he has no money and won't for a while. Car payments are $700 a month alone. Then insurance as well. Then gas, oh man is it a gas guzzler. The thing gets maybe 15mpg on the highway if that. He also owes like $14,000 for all the junk he put in there, you see he used credit cards to pay for all those lcds in the headrests etc and interest is building up. He barely has passengers in the car by the way, so nobody even uses the bloody things he has in there. He uses this massive, tricked out SUV for things like going to the post office, the movies, picking up dry cleaning and the gym. A regular car would have suited him just fine, but he wanted to act like a player or something. The thing is just a money hole for him. Hey at least, all the sluts like to look at him when he's driving by....lol. Someone said that women are more attracted to the image of wealth, than true wealth itself. I agree. A wise man would have saved his cash and gotten a Corolla or a Civic. Something reliable, easy to maintain and not a money pit.
It's times like this where I absolutely love my Toyota Corolla. It's not a showstopper, no one is impressed by it, girls don't get wet looking at it, but hey i'm happy with it. It's clean, and it's a 2004 model, so it's not old at all. It's completely paid off, so no payments. It gets 34mpg on the highway!! I think I fill it up maybe once a month, if that. I just don't see the need for a luxury vehicle, considering that I take public transportation to work everyday. A car right now, is just for running errands around town or for going to New Jersey or something. I don't need a $75,000 ride to do that. That Corolla is looking mighty fine to me.

This is an old classic American disease you are describing. The disease went into remission a little bit during the 60s and 70s, but now, from the looks of it, has roared back to life again A HUNDRED TIMES WORSE THAN EVER!
O tempora! O mores!
In a way, I truly pity the "ride monkeys" because they are such profoundly empty creatures. They literally do not have SOULS! Literally! Take their "ride" away, and what is left??? Just a mound of ambulatory flesh sucking up oxygen for no reason. (But their cars suck up oxygen too!)
But when I consider that they are EVERYWHERE, that their culture is inescapable, and that they have FAR too much power which they can turn to no good account, then I stop pitying them and begin to be seriously worried about the fact that they even exist at all....
The sad thing about it is that it turns off true car afficionados. It almost seems like every one of these guys in a luxury vehicle is a poser. They know nothing about cars. Reminds me of the stupid guy at the gym that won't shut the hell up about his Porsche Boxster. A boxster is the absolute bitch in the entire Porsche line-up. He had the nerve to make fun of a Pontiac GTO. Fools like him are just like women, they hear a namebrand and it makes them wet. They don't take into consideration, the power, reliability and usability of a car. He's too stupid to realize that the GTO is a 400hp vehicle that would obliterate his boxster in any measured test.
A boxster in NYC will have to stay in a garage for 6 months out of the year. As a primary vehicle, that's just dumb.
Youngbuck,
I have a late model Focus, similar to your Corolla. It'll be paid for by year's end. It's the best car I've ever owned; it has a nice combination of performance, economy, handling, and practicality. However, for me, cars are a tool-a transportation tool. As such, I don't see the point to buying a Porsche or something else.
For the performance, I'll rely on my motorcycle for that! I have a '99 ZRX1100; it has Kerker pipe, jet kit, and K & N pods. The thing GOES! Even with my 250# aboard, it'll hit 60 in 3.5 seconds or so. She has no problem maintaining 100 mph; on the other hand, at 44 years old, I do! With the exception of a handful of exotic cars (those costing well into the six figures), my bike will pretty much SPANK any four wheeler out there... :)
Don't get me wrong; I admire the Porsche 911, BMWs, and other cars for what they are-technological works of art. If I were driving all the time (as a salesman or something like that), I'd buy a BMW simply for the comfort, durability, and performance; IOW, I would buy one because it made sense to do so.
That said, my love has always been motorcycles. Ever since I can remember as a little boy, I LOVED motorcycles; I loved their elemental simplicity, with everything out in the open. I would never give up bikes unless my doctor said that riding would paralyze me. I DAMN SURE wouldn't give up riding for some bitch! I'd dump the bitch, and keep my bike... :)

Mark, amen bro. I love my Corolla, I really do. The thing is so damn reliable. I love the feeling of filling up the tank, and knowing that I won't have to fill it up for at least another month. Another guy at work just test drove a Lexus LS and will get it at the end of the year after hegets his bonus. He's bragging about it parallel parking itself. I mean, that's cool and all, but that's not worth 70 grand. My God man, some people are just stupid. There is no reason a guy in his mid 20's, working a 9 to 5 should be buying this. He's going to be paying for this ride for the next 6 years. What's the point? No one really drives much in NYC.
Dudes: I have a 1982 Honda Civic 1300FE (fuel efficient) that still gets 47mpg. It's been paid for since 1986. Where does all the money go that would have been poured into what is basically an appliance? THAI WOMEN. While you guys are looking for skank approval, I'm doin' it like they do on the Discovery Channel but in living color. Having a set of expensive wheels is like shooting your wad during foreplay...save your money for the good stuff: adventures and experiences which will stay with you long after that pile of steel is rusting away on the scrap heap.
I'm a 1990 Toyota Corolla driver myself. The paint is faded, its got a bit of rust on one fender, has a cassette and no cd player... but it's bullet proof reliable, doesn't burn oil, is dirt cheap on gas, no-body seems to want to steal it and people with "nice cars" get the hell out of my way because I don't give a crap about scratches and dings anymore.
Oh, and by having this car for MANY years and investing the money I would blown on making payments on a "nice car," I now have more than enough money to pay for a BMW in cash... but I'm gonna keep driving the Corolla until it dies, which I imagine will be somewhere around 2020.
