I find it interesting that your article focuses on a yahoo article drafted by an AP Medical Writer, then determine the "only voice of reason" is an male biological scientist. Perhaps it's just me, but I sense a small leap in logic.

HIV is different than AIDS. You use the terms interchangeably in your entry above. This confuses the supporting evidence you use to build your claim. Also, epidemiology is different than molecular biology, which you juxtapose as addressing the same questions. The focus on "transmission" is different depending on the scientific discipline; the word means different things to different scientists. I think this may be more consequential than the gender of the person creating medical information.

I guess that's just my humble opinion. Still, I'm less convinced of your claim that it is "bych" propaganda since finishing your article. It makes me wonder if focusing on gender, both feminist and anti-feminist, isn't equal in its worth.

Thing is, if this bych had written her little propaganda piece on a forum where she would have to defend it against legitimate debate...it'd be ripped to shreds.

The power of the media is that she doesn't have to - it's a ONE-WAY medium with NO READER FEEDBACK. She can say whatever she wants and not have to defend it or back it up. Reading it is thus like allowing yourself to get lectured instead of having a 2-way conversation.

Look, HIV transmission is pretty simple. It is a bodily fluid-borne disease - and thus sexually and IV-transmissible. Risk goes up with number of exposures. People who have more unprotected sex with more partners and IV drug users are thus at highest risk. Run the demographics on any country and you will see which of these will form the epicenter there.

I think HIV is a vice problem like smoking - it really doesn't matter how educated people are about it, they are still going to put themselves at risk if they want to. Emotions > intellect.
